Rochester Regional Health Organization (RRHIO) required a transformation to address the limitations of its outdated Health Information Exchange (HIE) operations. Seeking a scalable, modern solution, RRHIO partnered with Aigilx to implement the Meridian Data Aggregation Platform (MDAP) and integrate Mirth Connect Servers for strategic data feed management. This initiative marked a significant advancement in healthcare interoperability and data processing.
MDAP, launched in June 2020, marked a pivotal shift in RRHIO’s approach to health information management. This platform efficiently migrated close to a billion historical messages, establishing a new benchmark in healthcare data management. The addition of Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) support in 2021 further enhanced its capabilities.
MDAP now supports over 4.5 million patients, processing daily over 450,000 HL7V2 and 100,000 CCDA messages from more than 90 unique data sources across 35+ different EHR systems. It serves over 11,000 active users through a comprehensive provider portal, equipped with advanced operational and administrative tools.
The transition to MDAP has yielded numerous benefits for RRHIO:
The platform's capacity has almost doubled in response to the growing data volume over the last three years, showcasing its ability to scale according to demand.
Leveraging a micro services architecture and Mirth Connect’s versatility, RRHIO has expanded its capabilities, including CCDA ingestion, validation, and reporting in line with NCQA requirements, alongside FHIR resource exchange with New York state.
Achieving strict state-mandated availability requirements has not only improved operations but also positioned RRHIO for state incentives.
MDAP has demonstrated high return on investment and low total cost of ownership, adding more features over time without significant infrastructure changes.
The system's strong security, comprehensive auditing, and reporting features have effortlessly met regulatory demands, ensuring sensitive data, such as Part-2 data, is handled with the utmost integrity using sophisticated info-tagging techniques.
The technological backbone of MDAP comprises leading-edge tools and technologies, including Kafka, Docker Engine, Nginx, Postgres, Redis, Mirth Connect, Open Search, Amazon Corretto, NodeJS, React JS, Angular, Hapijs, and Pg Bouncer. This robust stack ensures the platform’s reliability, performance, and adaptability to the dynamic landscape of healthcare data management.
RRHIO’s shift to MDAP, supported by Aigilx and Mirth Connect, redefines health information exchange standards. This transition not only addresses current healthcare challenges but also lays the groundwork for future advancements, showcasing the potential of modern data platforms to improve healthcare outcomes, efficiency, and compliance.
